History

Bestway and its subsidiaries are owned by Karl D. Ochs, who has been building the business for more than 25 years. Bestway Enterprises began in 1978, selling treated lumber and other building products to retail lumber yards and home centers. The wholesale division became a major asset to the company, increasing the company's size and forcing the move in 1981 to the present location in Cortland, New York. This location now includes a large wholesale lumber yard, a pressure treatment plant, four dry kilns, the corporate offices, repair shop, weigh station and fuel depot. Several trucks and trailers owned by the company are also located and serviced here.

Since inception, the business has grown throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. The locations include the following: Bestway of New England, Bestway South, Bestway of Gouverneur, Bestway of Pennsylvania, HDK Wood Products and Builder's Best.

In 1987, Bestway of New England was established in Lancaster, Massachusetts to provide treating, drying and reloading services to third parties.

In 1989, in order to separate the retail lumber yard from the wholesale division, Bestway created Builder's Best Home Improvement Center, Inc. This is the only retail division within the Bestway Enterprise that services professional builders. It carries a broad range of home and building materials and has an equipment rental center.

Bestway South, in Stony Point, North Carolina opened in 1997 and operates as a Treating Services Only (TSO) facility. Some of the lumber that is treated through this plant is also shipped to other Bestway locations.

In 1998, Bestway Enterprises purchased a treatment plant in Gouverneur, New York known as Bestway of Gouverneur. This location includes a 32 acre site, new offices, warehouse, repair shop, fuel depot, weigh station and a rail siding.

Bestway of Pennsylvania was opened in Creso, PA in 2001 and operates as a TSO plant. This location serves the Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey markets, which has a large demand for treated lumber.

The HDK Wood Products plant was established in 1999 in Harrisville, New York. The main purpose of the plant was originally for drying and planing White Pine. However, in October 2003, Bestway purchased sawmill equipment for the plant. A fully functioning sawmill facility was then operational in the latter part of 2005. This is a great asset since Harrisville has a plentiful supply of White Pine, but not enough saw mills to fabricate the lumber.

Bestway Enterprises has continued to grow since its debut in 1978. With the industry continuing to hold strong, and homes being built steadily rising, Bestway will always be a step ahead of competition to ensure that our client's needs are met or exceeded. You can always count on Bestway for high quality lumber products and service.
